NTU’s engagement in University Social Responsibility (USR)
In 2019, NTU established the Office of Institutional Research and Social Responsibility. Based on the 2015 United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals, NTU launched a blueprint for its sustainability goals. On June 23, 2020, NTU published its NTU Social Responsibility and Sustainablity Report, which integrated medical research, public health education, food safety, agricultural education, long-term care, smart cities, sustainable environment and resource transformation process, and other practical measures that contribute to the sustainable development of future generations.
NTU is responding to the climate crisis and fulfilling its social responsibilities by adjusting our investments. Since 2019, we have been gradually divesting from high-pollution industries, and by December 2020, we have completed divestment from high-pollution and high-carbon industries – a first in Asia. Additionally, in 2020, the NTU Financial Affairs Office established the "National Stocks Sustainable Investment Guideline" to ensure stable and sustainable university operations, and carried out its environmental responsibility by investing in enterprises who practice ESG (Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance) and CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility). NTU refers to indexes on domestic and foreign institutions such as those provided by CommonWealth Magazine’s CSR rankings, the FTSE4Good TIP Taiwan ESG Index, and the Taiwan Depository & Clearing Corp as guides for its investments. NTU's sustainable investment accounted for about 59.9% of its investments in 2018, increasing significantly to 74.4% in 2019, and to 78.7% in 2020, demonstrating our commitment in applying our investments to sustainable social development and in fulfilling the university's social responsibilities.
