  • Giving to NTUADF: Procedure and Timeline

  • To cater to our international donors who have tax-deduction needs, NTU has established the NTUADF to process all gifts from the U.S. As banks charge a fee for each wire transfer, to minimize losses in fees for multiple transactions, NTU collects international donations through NTUADF in batches. In other words, if the sum of international donations that NTUADF receives for a given period is not sufficiently substantial, we will wait to accumulate more before wiring a donation batch to Taiwan.

What this also means is that international donations to NTU will require extra processing time. Not only is NTU relying on the goodwill and personal time of our kind alumni to process these international donations, we also have to factor in the various domestic accounting processes related to receiving large sums of money from abroad. Therefore, it takes significantly more time to process international donations through NTUADF than it does for domestic donations. We hope for your kind understanding in this matter.

We strongly advise against going through NTUADF if you have a Taiwanese bank account. This is because the cash flow (Taiwan→U.S.→Taiwan) will arouse money-laundering suspicions and trigger unnecessary attention from the U.S. Internal Revenue Service.

NTUADF is in charge of the tax deduction procedures of all gifts from the U.S. Once you receive a donation receipt from NTUADF, it means that your gift to NTUADF is complete, and will thus be tax-deductible in the U.S. We encourage donors with tax-deduction needs in the U.S. to take advantage of the NTUADF channel.

  • Donor Roll for International Gifts

  • Due to the aforementioned reasons, international donations to NTU will require extra processing time. The process might take several months, even up to half a year. Furthermore, gifts made through the NTUADF will have to go through NTU’s internal accounting procedures to finalize. Therefore, it may take a while for your name to appear on the Donor Roll. We ask for your patience as we process your international gift.

Due to the complex and multi-step procedures of our international gifts, there will be discrepancies between the actual donation timeline and the dates that the NTU internal accounts will register. As such, we have decided to not include the dates of our international gifts in the Donor Roll.

We include a copy of each year’s Donor Roll in our annual year-end mailings. In principle, the list should show all donations made within the most recent calendar year; however, due to the special circumstances of international donations mentioned above, we will exercise our discretion and include international donations that were not covered in the previous year’s list, to ensure that all donors (who have consented to disclosure) will receive their deserved recognition.

The international gifts that NTU receives in batches from NTUADF will be periodically published in the NTU Alumni Bimonthly. However, as our international donor roll has to align with NTU financial records, there is not a fixed timeline as to when a gift will appear in the magazine. Should you have any questions about your gift, feel free to write to us at ntufinance@ntu.edu.tw
